Synopsis: Shy guy Negishi Soichi (Matsuyama Kenichi) moves from the countryside to Tokyo to pursue his musical dreams. His goal is to become a folk singer-songwriter, the kind that strums acoustic guitars and brings joy to the world with cheery songs.

But somehow he ends up the lead singer of the extreme death metal band Detroit Metal City (DMC). Quiet, mild-mannered, and downright dorky by day, Soichi turns loud and vulgar by night when his alter-ego “Johannes Krauser II” takes stage in goth costume and face paint.

Leading a strange and secret double life, Soichi and band climb the ladders of the J-rock indie scene. DMC is adored by their head-thrashing fans, but Soichi himself is too embarrassed to admit he’s in the band. Worse yet, the girl of his dreams (Kato Rosa) hates DMC even more than he does.

Synopsis: Gamagori Futaro has been poor since the day he was born. As a child his recklessly wasteful and abusive father sunk the family into debt and disappeared, leaving Futaro and his sick mother to fend for themselves. After her death Futaro became obsessed with money and willing to do anything for it. Several years pass and Futaro finds himself working at “Mikuni Shipbuilding” where he meets the company president’s daughters Midori, who was his former classmate, and her younger sister Akane, who is disabled, and like Futaro, has a scarred face. In a plot to acquire their fathers company, Futaro begins to get close the sisters…

The undyed short hair, deep blue stockings and clear eyes. When asked about her ideal man – “Someone like my father”. The radiant Nao Minamisawa (18), is currently a high school student. Playing the lead role in the movie and drama Akai Ito, she had her first kiss scene.

It’s so rare these days – when a girl says “someone like my father” is her ideal man.

It’s the truth. It would be great if I could marry someone like my dad. He makes me laugh with his jokes. In his school days, and even after joining a company, he still plays basketball. He’s cool.

A father would be tearing hearing that from his daughter. This father would also have been nervous as Nao Minamisa a took her role in 2008. She had to debut her on-screen kiss. Her character in Akai Ito, Mei, has a kiss with Atsushi (Mizobata Junpei) during their junior high school trip excursion.

Its like… even I myself am embarrassed to watch the movie. It felt so awkward, and I was very tensed. My hands began to sweat, my body was almost frozen in place and I couldn’t move naturally.

Were there many retakes?

The director said “To capture the innocence of the moment, we will do this in one take!” That’s what it was supposed to be – a one take scene. Many times over, we were told “That looked stiff”. Junpei-kun too, was feeling the same as I was. Both of us were warned.

It was a first kiss for Mei, what about Nao?

Hehhehh… I didn’t do it when I was in junior high school.

Ah ok, let’s overlook that and agree that it wasn’t your first kiss. You’re now in the third year of senior high school. That means…

“…” (She has a happy expression on her face, but her lips are sealed. “I’m not going to reply!” That’s what she means.)

An unforgettable scene?

Yes, it was. The scenery was impressive, and it’s my favourite. Although A-kun is a quiet guy, we talked about many things there. It’s like… it’s the peak of A-kun’s and Mei’s love, in that scene, where they are at their happiest.

With Mei standing close, and because she was feeling nothing but the happiness from the bottom of her heart, she was able to open herself and give her reply without any hesitation.

I’m playing the lead in both the drama and movie, and it’s a novel that has been read by many people. For the first time, I feel much responsibility in delivering this work, I gave my all in it. There’s still much that I have to learn, and I am looking forward to it.

Nao, who has completed “the first time” safely, is growing steadily.

Synopsis: Jan Di is an average girl whose family owns a dry cleaning store located near the luxurious and well known Shin Hwa College. Jan Di meets the four richest and most spoiled boys when she delivers laundry to the school one day. The boys are known as F4 and cause trouble to those who speak out against them.

Note:

• In this HYD adaptation, Jan Di’s parents are not always scheming to become rich and enter high society. Jan Di entered the elite school through her heroic action and the parents are hardworking lower-middle-class folks.
  The title “Boys Before Flowers” (or the Japanese hana yori dango) refers to the privileged quartet who rule the roost at their elite private school. They’ve adopted the name “Flower Four,” which gets shortened to F4, and are in their last year of high school at the incredibly exclusive school for the insanely wealthy, Shinhwa High School. It’s so sought-after that aspiring attendees are placed on a waiting list practically upon birth. The school starts with Shinhwa Kindergarten and goes straight through Shinhwa University.
• The cast and crew spent a week filming in the South Pacific in New Caledonia and on Waiheke Island. Filming also includes Macau.
• Apparently “hana yori dango” is a Japanese adage meaning that food (dango) is more important than flowers (hana) — or rather, sustenance comes before superficial beauty. The manga twisted that to suggest that boys (dango) were more important than flowers. A third reading suggests that these four characters are “boys” before they’re “flowers” — that is to say, their roles as people are more important than their collective fame as Flower Four.
• Boys Over Flowers – choosing a boy (or love) over flowers (or something superficial)
• Boys Before Flowers – they are boys before “flowers”, in reference to the four main male characters being called F4 or Flower Four.
• Boys Before Flowers – a girl choosing a boy (or the boy’s affections) before choosing some flowers (or a material gift etc) / choosing a boy’s affections rather than choosing the flowers he’s giving you.

Koo Hye Sun as Geum Jan Di

An average high-school girl from a family that owns a small dry-cleaning business. Her family is not poor but not really middle-class either.

From a young age, when her mother worked at the counter of a swimming pool, she began to love the water and her hobby is swimming. She is well-known for being a good swimmer; she was even featured in a local newspaper. In a moment of fate, while she is on a delivery job, she saves a student from drowning in a suicide attempt, and then she is scouted to her new school as a representative of the swim team. Despite her stubbornness and clean nature, she is pushed to attend the school that does not fit her personality at her parents’ will.

In the midst of all the drama of the rich students and especially the F4 members, when she arrives she becomes a “red card target” for bullying. But she has strength and energy, and unfailing survival skills even with everyone stepping all over her. With her “hungry mindset” that she has nowhere to retreat and nothing to lose, she is able to win with her strong health despite her small frame.

One day she meets an F4 member YoonJiHoo while hiding in a corner of the emergency stairs, and she feels a strange emotion and her heart beats faster around him – but things get complicated when the F4 leader GooJoonPyo makes a bold, aggressive confession of love.

Lee Min Ho as Goo Joon Pyo

F4 leader, son of Korea’s representative jaebul family, future successor of ShinHwa Group company. He grew up at the hands of the company’s employees rather than his parents. He believes the world is his for the taking, and that he is the most important person between Earth and Heaven.

However, he has troubles of his own, things that come with being part of a jaebul family. Growing up, he gained a confident, aggressive mindset: “I can do anything if I try.”

He had to overcome a lot terrifying situations like kidnap while he was growing up. However, because of this, he is a master at all kinds of martial arts. Because of a certain terrifying kidnapping incident, the one physical thing he keeps at a distance is water. One other crucial Achilles heel he has is his older sister whom he fears even more that God Himself. But the ironic thing is that he falls deeply for JanDi, who reminds him of this older sister he dreads.

Like his curly hair, he has a hot, unpredictable temper and rough personality, but inside he is like a child with his purity. He is flawless in 5 languages because he’s traveled so much around the world. But with that follows a weakness in basic common sense and the Korean language. He tends to follow his instincts rather than logic, so he is rather simple-minded and he shows his emotions in a frank manner.

Surprisingly, he is innocent around girls; in the face of love, he turns into a naïve boy. So he is extremely pained when he finds out JanDi’s heart is with his closest friend JiHoo in the F4 group. However, he cannot give up JanDi and remains true to his feelings until the end, and even with his parents’ strong opposition, his love never waivers and soon this love starts to move JanDi’s heart little by little.

Kim Hyun Joong as Yoon Ji Hoo

He is known for being the “pretty boy” or “flower boy” of the F4 group. He is the future successor of an art center and orchestra, among other things. In a sense, he is also a musician. He is part of a powerful political family, grandson of the former President of South Korea.

When he was 5 years old, he lost his parents to a car accident and has since lived by himself. Because of the accident, he showed signs of becoming autistic (characterized by impaired communication and emotional detachment). However, he was able to recover through his first love SeoHyun. He believed that SeoHyun would be his first and last love, but he found that she was a woman no one could get close to completely.

While he was hesitating with his love for SeoHyun, it was JanDi who helped him regain his courage. Suddenly, it seemed that JanDi was thrown into his life one day, a weed-like girl from a less-than-average family. This girl made him take action upon his love for SeoHyun. With JanDi’s encouragement, he followed SeoHyun to France but realized there that his “love” for SeoHyun had been an idealistic, fantasy, dream-like thing. He returns to Korea. However, there is another complicated love waiting for him there. It is a familiar position for him, but that is what makes it all the more painful.

He lives in his own world, his own personal time and space. He has a straight, perfect plan for himself. From time to time, he is random and a bit silly. But he has a clear idea of what he wants and a clear perspective on things. He has a relaxed, calm, and unhurried nature. All of these characteristics make it impossible for those around him to make him waiver or shake his emotions.

Before he meets JanDi, he has no interest in other people’s affairs. Not only does he not care about these things, he is an icy, prickly person. He is the “cool prince.” When he meets JanDi, with his innate piercing insight into people’s souls, he searches for, pays attention to, and cares for every little thing in JanDi’s heart and mind. They stand on a shaky, dangerous rope between friendship and love.

Gifted potter and successor of a noble family. Highly popular among the girls in the college but his heart is starting to feel for Jan Di’s best friend Chu Ga Eul. Yi Jung who is always surrounded by girls from the upper class puts his eyes on this ordinary girl.

The most flirtatious of the group, Song Woo Bin is the son of giant corporation in the construction industry. As the successor of a newly-promoted noble family, he is poised to face a political marriage against his will and his flirtatious nature is just a way of self-indulgence.

The first love of Yoon Ji Hoo. Although Seo Hyun belongs to the upper-class, she has always wanted to live an independent life using her own means. She is not only a scholar studying law in Paris, but at the same time is also a famous model on the international stage. In order to “search for herself”, she decides to breakup with Ji Hoo. Kim So Eun as Chu Ga Eul

Best friend of Jan Di, and very feminine character. Whenever Jan Di is faced with any trouble, Ga Eul will always churn out ideas like an experienced adult. Gentle-looking on the surface but is actually a girl with a strong resolute. Met with F4 because of Jan Di and even falls in love with So Yi Jung in the end.
